If you’re looking for a reading pad for reading ebooks and don’t know whether to get a dedicated ereader or a tablet PC, you’ve come to the right place.

Since the advent of ebooks there has been a convergence of technology from dedicated ereader devices like the Kindle and the Nook or Pad PCs that can simply run programs that can read ebooks. We now have ereader manufacturers like Amazon and Barnes & Noble making pad PCs like the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet, which have completed this merging of technology, but you might say they have finally caught up with the wildly successful iPad 2.

The iPad 2 is a phenomenon in and of itself, being more than just a tablet PC, but a movement away from PCs as we know them today. While the CEO of HP might not think the iPad is a real competitor against the PC, she might not be looking at the same data everyone else is. The fact is that tablet sales are doing what netbooks never did – they’re starting to erode the base of laptop sales, which were already higher than desktop sales in the US. The fact that businesses and creatives may still need a PC (laptop or desktop) to use Excel or Photoshop doesn’t mean that the majority of other users who want instant on, an intuitive interface, and a portable form factor aren’t wholly satisfied with the tablet market.

So what tablet should you buy? Whole sites have popped up to answer this question. Tablet Comparison is a site that compares different tablet computers from various manufacturers based on screen size and operating system. Most tablets nowadays use the Android operating system, but that doesn’t mean it’s the most used tablet operating system. Due to the sheer number of iPads sold, the iOS is the dominant tablet operating system on the market right now even though there are hundreds of competing tablet computers running Android. There just hasn’t been a clear leader yet. The closest competitors have been the Motorola Xoom, the HP TouchPad, and the Samsung Galaxy Tab. If those tablets are out of your price range, you might consider the Kindle Fire, the Nook Tablet, or one of the Coby Kyros MID tablets.

HP unveils TouchPad tablet PC featuring webOS

According to Computer World, HP’s TouchPad resembles Apple’s iPad (a sleek, black device with a 9.7-inch touch display, weighing in at 1.6 pounds). One advantage that HP may have over Apple is it’s ability to print to HP’s variety of printers, something that Apple doesn’t currently have, but is working on (AirPrint).

The TouchPad uses a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (Apple’s A4 processor is 1GHz for comparison), has a high-resolution, 1024×768 display and is 1.3 centimeters thick at its widest part. It has a 1.3-megapixel webcam (one more than the iPad) and supports video calls in much the same way as Apple’s FaceTime feature (available only on the iPhone). It will come with 16GB or 32GB of storage and has an optional wireless keyboard (sold separately) for people who don’t want to do a lot of typing on the touchscreen.

HP’s webOS productivity suite, TouchPad at Work, includes QuickOffice, Google Docs and virtual private network (VPN) support – and unlike the iPad, Flash is supported. The tablet’s photo app displays photosfrom a user’s Facebook, Snapfish or other online account, and comments posted on Facebook photos can be displayed on images when they are opened on the device. The address book will include LinkedIn and Facebook contacts.

Tablet PCs

HP is entering a crowded field when it comes to tablets, which are becoming more and more popular. Along with the mighty Apple iPad it will compete with devices based on Google’s Android, the latest version of which, Honeycomb, will debut later this month in the Motorola Xoom tablet. That 10.1-inch device will retail for $800, according to a leaked Best Buy advertisement. Compare the iPad to the Xoom. Research in Motion is also in the game with its PlayBook tablet, which runs its own BlackBerry software. There are also tablets based on Windows 7, though Microsoft has struggled to make an impression in the tablet market.

About webOS

HP acquired webOS last April when it bought Palm for $1.2 billion in a surprise move. HP’s own handset business had not been doing particularly well and it saw Palm as a way to give itself a leg up, even though Palm was not a market leader either. This is a case of 1 plus 1 making 11.

HP also saved a surprise for the end — it will bring its webOS to PCs, Bradley said. He didn’t give any details and said HP will talk more about that later in the year. It doesn’t necessarily mean that HP will ship PCs without Windows; it could take some of the webOS components and integrate them to give better synergy between the devices.

The inclusion of the iWorks utilities gives this device a little bit of a laptop personality, but this isn’t a PC replacement. You might be able to get away with ditching a laptop if all you really do is e-mail or very light word processing, but if you do anything more than that you’ll like the freedom and ease a full computer offers for more complex tasks. That said, this device is a tremendous leap towards a future tablet-PC-style device that could be a replacement for your computer, but for now it is more of a casual use device than something you can really expect to do substantial work with. For lengthy typing, consider buying either the keyboard dock or the wireless bluetooth keyboard.

Battery life lives up to the claims, getting about 7 hours before getting the 20% remaining battery life indication, which puts it about right for 10 hours or so of total use. One very important thing to realize about charging the device is that there are some issues with charging via USB from many computers. The iPad is different than other Apple products in that it requires a bit more power to charge up, and unfortunately most USB ports aren’t set up to support that higher power draw. This is something that may be fixed in a firmware update to allow for a slower charge, or it may simply be that you’ll need to either rely on a new Mac or the wall charger. Just don’t be surprised if you plug it into your computer and it doesn’t show that it is charging.

All in all, the iPad is an impressive device that might make for a reasonable replacement of a netbook for casual users. For people who need something to really do a lot of work on, you may find that for the price that a netbook or laptop still offers the better value for your needs. Future generations of this device will probably transition into fitting that market better than this first generation. However, if you’re an avid reader, casual gamer, music fan, who doesn’t do much more on the web than check a few sites, and e-mail. This thing is definitely worth considering! If you’re on the fence, nothing about this product is so incredible as to justify running out and buying one right now, but it is worthy of your consideration if you’re thinking you might like a tablet style device. I definitely would encourage you to go play with one at best buy or an apple store to get a feel for it.
