Amazon Considering Mobile Devices Beyond Kindle
Amazon.com is looking into expanding beyond its Kindle ereader into developing other mobile devices, The New York Times reported, citing people with direct knowledge of the company’s plans. Amazon’s Kindle has quickly become the company’s top-selling product, and is helping grow ebook sales, which now account for more than hardcover sales.
The company’s Lab 126, which produced the Kindle, has a slate of job openings for positions related to electronics hardware, and “has been looking into building other gadgets that it could sell to consumers,” sources told The New York Times.
“[Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos'] original goal for the lab was to build a range of other devices. There was talk of music players and other electronics,” one source told The Times, adding that a mobile phone was also briefly discussed, but “seemed out of Amazon’s reach,” but more rumors are surfacing that Amazon may be considering an Android-powered tablet. Only time will tell.
